What can a plant or animal specimen collected over 150 years ago teach us today? That is the question we ask ourselves when learning about Juan Cristóbal Gundlach (1810–1896), a German-born naturalist who lived much of his life in Cuba, traversing the island for decades to observe, collect, and document its natural world. His expeditions gave rise to significant natural history collections—particularly of Cuban fauna—though they also included plant species.
Far from being mere relics of the past, these collections serve as vital records of biodiversity. Each specimen can hold information regarding a species' habitat, its physical characteristics, and how its distribution has shifted over time. By comparing these historical records with present-day biodiversity, scientists can gain a better understanding of ecosystem transformations and the challenges facing conservation efforts.
