Budget cuts and health care: implications of Decree No. 333/2026

Decree No. 333/2026 reduces the Free Fiscal Contribution to Chile's Ministry of Health by $413,193 million, constituting the largest budget cut to the health sector in the country's democratic history. This article analyzes its implications for hospital production, primary care, infrastructure, older adults, mental health, and out-of-pocket spending. Evidence shows that 45.7% of the cut directly affects hospital production, leaving approximately 28,019 discharges unfunded. The cut is regressive, amplifies wasteful spending, and transfers costs to the most vulnerable patients.
